Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a speech writer. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. It hosts video clips which include commentary on the depictions of women in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that explores the representations of females in popular culture narratives. In her efforts to break down stereotypes related to women in popular culture, she also works on issues related the harassing women targeted by the media and others on the internet. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she's extremely sought-after and has given talks at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality from a very young stage of her life. When she graduated in 2009, in university, she created the Feminist Frequency site. It was a girl who wanted to create a series of web videos which would explore how gender is represented in games. In the end, she ended up being the victim of online harassment. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as an activist for women in media. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. This non-profit educational organization studies women's roles in the pop-culture narratives.
